All That Remains Is Silence - first chapter

child was lying awake in bed awaiting his father to tuck him in and read to
him till he fell asleep. His dad arrived in the room and pulled the
blankets up over the child and tucked them up under the child´s chin. The
man pulled up a chair and sat down beside his son. He looked down at
the child with a warm smile, “Are you comfortable?”
child looked up at him with curious eyes, “mmhmm.”
man leaned back in his chair and began to recite a poem with an
almost musical tone in his voice:
child ran through a forest,
ran and ran into the new day.
stopped at the sound of a chorus,
to find, instead, a sparkling bay.
child smiled at the sight,
he had found beauty.
wished he had flight,
so that he may flee cruelty.
chorus had stilled,
waves faded into the distance.
child found himself chilled,
in the end all that remains is silence.
young man was aged,
had taken its toll.
felt the world was caged,
it was just his own soul.
young man sought peace,
to find death.
young man walked empty streets,
to find no breath.
found it was soft.
tried to protect this life,
it was lost.
young man sought comfort,
flee from that shiver.
young man wished to recover,
in the end all that remains is a whisper.
older man was worn,
time and pain had taken him.
older man could not morn,
those who were taken from him.
waged battles he could not win,
losses at every end.
body was broken from within,
he continued until he could transcend.
the end grew near him,
continued and never ceased.
knew his fate was grim,
he never ceased.
old man’s time was gone,
he passed into the new and old realm.
old man was in a new dawn,
in the end all that remains…
father stopped as he realized his son had fallen asleep. He smiled at
the child and bent down to kiss his son on the forehead before quietly getting up. He carefully picked up his chair and
put it against the wall. He walked to the doorway and looked back at
the child before turning off the lights and closing the door behind
