Heart part 1
‘Follow your heart as long as you live.’
In a dark room, only lit up by a torchlight held in a mouth, came the sound of a heart monitor. The constant beeps going off every second didn’t break the concentration on the person operating. Quickly, but carefully, removing the small device covered in blood and put it in a small tin bowl. Glove covered hand searched for a needle and thread, listening to the ticking of the clock behind her.
She sighed in relief as she found it and quickly went to work on sewing the unconscious teen together again. Halfway through sewing she stopped and looked behind her, hearing the sound of a car outside before the shutting of the car door. She sped up in a hurry to finish sewing the wide gash at the side until she heard a door open nearby.
“No…Why!?” she cried.
She ripped off her surgical mask and tore off her blood covered gloves before rushing to the unconscious female teen’s side.
“U.M.133… I have to give it up!” She whispered whilst stroking her pale cheek. Tearing off the air mask, switching off the heart monitor and pulling the teen into a sitting position, she lightly slapped her cheek to wake her up. She tried a little harder now hearing the footsteps getting closer to the room they were in.
“Umi, please wake up!” She pleaded, dragging the barely awake girl to the floor; he legs too weak to keep her up, head hung down and mouth open a little in hopes of getting air into her lungs.
“Umi! Wake up!” She was begging for the drowsy girl to wake up, she could hear the footsteps getting even closer than before.
Ruby red eyes opened slightly, a head of short white hair rising slowly to look into dark chocolate eyes. The flashlight, now on the floor, shine on her face making her close her eyes again at the brightness.
“There’s no time, look! Please wake up!” The older woman pulled the younger onto her feet, using herself as a stand; a white dress fell down just below pale knees that wobbled before falling again but kept up by the body next to her.
“Hey… I’m begging you, please listen carefully.” Tears rolling down her cheeks as she got her coat from the floor and put the youngers arms into it after she had sitting her down again. “Listen. If you walk 13km in a North-west direction, there’s a station. Take a train from there. Knolg, Swister, Mina Apartment, room 206! Got it!?”
The older woman held the girl´s face to make sure she was awake. Half lidded red eyes slowly blinked getting used to the light still in her eye; she gave a weak nod, pulling the large coat over for warmth. The footsteps were just down the hall, getting increasingly louder and faster.
“You older brothers live there. They’re called Leo and Yujean.”
“Leo…” Umi whispered. “And Yujean…?”
“That’s right!” She smiled a little, tears still falling. “The two of them will definitely protect you.” The older woman grabbed the flashlight from the floor and switched it off, the only light was from the moon the in through the door window.
“Pull yourself together and stand up!” She pulled the teen up and pushed her towards the back door. The footsteps were now just outside the door and the handle just tuning only to stop when they released the door was locked; slamming their body against it roughly.
“Know remember, Knolg, Swister, Mina Apartment, room 206. You must go the Leo and Yujean’s place. Now go. Go!” Umi was pushed out the door into the cold night air by the older woman, the door slamming in her face. She looked at the door for a few seconds before turning and walking away, her mind in a heavy daze.
“Mother…” she mumbled, walking a few steps before falling to the ground.
“Mother…” She hugged the coat around her closer to her and looked up the dark sky, her red eyes now open wide, mind more fogged than before.
She stood up again and leaned on the wall next to her for support. “Northwest… 13km… 13km in a North-west direction…” She pushed herself from the wall keeping close to it and moving her hands against it. She kept repeating the directions and location out loud, carrying on her pursuit.
On the other side of the door, the elder woman sank to the floor, sobs coming out of her mouth. The person smashing their body against the door had managed to push the door by its hinges. The door now lay on the floor, wooden bits scattered on the ground. Footsteps slowly made their way to her, stopping right in front of her.
Looking up, she noticed the black shoes of the owner, followed by black trousers, a white lab coat, a black button up shirt and a head of curly brown hair. The owner´s face covered by the darkness surrounding them.
“Can you explain yourself?” Asked a deep male voice.
She wiped away her tears and looked up at him with a confident look, though that’s not how she felt. “I had no choice but to do that… Since the matter has gone this far.”
“I’m going to have to report this.” The man pulled out a small notebook and pen from his lab coat pocket and began writing.
“Go on then.” She stood from the ground and glared at him, confidence now flowing through her slowly. “Say whatever you want.”
She turned behind her and grabbed an object from the table behind her; a large scalpel and pointed it to her wrist that was outstretched upwards. “Tell them I’m no longer needed.”
The man slowly put the notebook and pen back into his coat pocket and turned to look at her, face stoic though she could not see it.
